Anything about Doom a new user should know
« on: June 02, 2016, 10:20:18 AM »
I'm finally ordering my new GPU and Doom today. Should be in by Monday. Is there anything I should know about the game before I start? Like I've heard here about corrupted saved games and an issue with developer mode and the cloud? Any tips would be nice.

Depending on your internet speed maybe you should start downloading on time in order to not end up waiting like other users here...
I got six little friends and they all run faster than you ;)

Well I want a hard copy so I'll be waiting too. I'm dreading it because my net connection sucks.

There is no hard copy. You'll still have to download almost whole game through Steam, even if you buy it on the disk.

Yeah I know. But I want a hard copy. A box. A disc. To add to my shelf.

It's all been ordered. Should be here Monday. Will take a while to download so not sure if I'll get to play it Monday. But next week for sure.

@ 45gb to download, you might not get to play monday.  :)

Every time I exit the game I copy my savegame folder (c:\users\username\saved games\id software\doom\base\savegame) to another folder, just in case.  I have two copies so if one is corrupted and I don't know I can revert to an older one.

Validate your steam cache for the game BEFORE you play the first time.  So yes, you download the game, then have it check & possibly redownload again.  :)

Disable the steam cloud for that game.  You will still get achivements & be able to upload your screenshots, but it's a PITA with the savegame corruption & crashes.

Besides that, have fun.  :)  It's a lot of fun to kill demons in this game.  :)

U know I love killing demons.  ;D

I'll do all those. Probably not the check cache tip though if I'm being honest. I think I'll be way to excited. And I rarely have issues with my games like that. Is Doom more prone to getting corrupted?

I put in 23 hrs into the game and never had issues with save games.

The only issue I had was freezing when loading first Hello level. Solved it by switching into windowed mode, loading the map, reaching first checkpoint and then switching back to full screen mode.

GPU issue?

No idea. Apparently I am not the only one who had that issue (Googled it).

Could be just slow CPU/RAM coupled with intense effects and massive horde of demons (I had slo-mo going on before Hell was loaded). Could be engine's / game's bug.

Friar's issues are properly unfortunate and I'd suggest bucking the trend.

On a relatively high end PC I've had zero crashes/major issues after 30 hours.  That's on a PC with a faulty CPU that will hard freeze in every single game (eventually), except Doom, funnily enough.  So I'd have to echo the polar opposite of Friars issues, the game runs buttery smooth on both my work and home PC's.

The one thing I would mention though is that all of your settings are saved on steamcloud.  This includes graphics settings, so it's a pain in the ass to go between my home and work PC's as the work one has less VRAM (lower Virtual Texture size) and runs a different aspect ratio to my home PC.

Other than that, I imagine if you're running on modern hardware, you'll be fine.  If not, you may have issues.

After I get my new GPU my specs will be:

Phenom II X4 940 3ghz
8 gigs ddr2
GeForce gtx 960 4 ghz

My processor and ram will be my worst problem but I think I'll be ok. Couldn't be any worse then playing Fallout 4 right now. I'll do everything Friar said except for the check cache. I can't wait another day if it needs to be downloaded again.

Friar's issues are properly unfortunate and I'd suggest bucking the trend.

Happens to a lot of people so far & according to the crash reports (not related to the dev mode bug, officially), it seems to happen on Win 7/8/10, AMD & Nvidia GPU's, various amounts of RAM.

I haven't had the game crash in several days until yesterday.  I'm thinking the crashes are a driver issue (both Nvidia & AMD released drivers just for this game and some people even report those breaking the game) & I think the dev mode bug are due to the drm & resource files.  The biggest issue with the dev mode bug is that once your game is flagged in dev mode you can't get achievements/upload your snapmaps until you fix it.  Seems the DRM does a checksum of the resource files/save games & if they don't match it launches the game in dev mode (for resource files) & locks your save games in dev mode (if it's the save game).

After I get my new GPU my specs will be:

Phenom II X4 940 3ghz
8 gigs ddr2
GeForce gtx 960 4 ghz

Seems the GPU is the important part for this game. Your CPU is below the spec but at worst you just lower some quality to play.
