Title: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on May 19, 2014, 12:32:36 PM
Kind of a replacement for the semi-permanent loss of Doom3World.  Still in the starting stages.  So, make a new thread and introduce yourself here.

Let me see if this works...

Hmm... it still won't let me create a new topic for "id Tech Forums » id Tech 4 (Doom3/Prey/Q4) » id Tech 4 Mods » Start new topic"...

I am receiving:
QuoteForbidden

You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I also did not receive an e-mail confirmation.

Let me check.   I have to set the permissions manually and I setup an e-mail confirmation after you two signed up.

I can't get myself sent an e-mail so I disabled the e-mail registration.  But you're already registered so that's not the issue.

My test account can make a new topic there, maybe it was just a glitch.

Eventually there is a max digits/pictures limit per post that I am breaching... I have a backup thread of the MCS Mod D3W Thread that I try to repost here but it won't let me... when I just paste the first line it lets me preview the post but if I add the entire phpbb3 thread/post code it spits out the above mentioned error...

That's the thread I try to post: http://www.scared-pixel-studios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=564

I have another suggestion. Since this is a technical forum, you should install a syntax highlighter plugin (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3070).

There is was a limit of 20,000.  I removed it.  Try posting again please.

the idea behind creating this forum was to provide an alternative to doom3world.org, right? If that is the case then id tech 4 subforum should be at the very top. Moreover, id tech 1 already has several dedicated and most importantly populated forums and tons of resources for mod developers. id tech 5 will never take off since it is currently limited to map making for RAGE and no game logic can be changed by modders (or am I wrong?). John Carmack left id and we all know Zenimax, so the possibility of id Tech 5 being open-sourced is virtually nonexistent. The new Wolfenstein can't be modded at all and there's no word about DOOM IV modding either.

Moving the id tech 4 to that top is a good idea.  Not sure if you or anyone else noticed, for the forum categories there's a little "-" to the right.  That will minimize the lists.  So if you never want to see id tech 1, for example, you can always have that minimized.  I, peronsally, like Q2 & D3 to mod, so I expect myself to be posting in those forums from time to time.

Quote from: Radegast on May 20, 2014, 04:51:25 PMmake the forum a bit more doomish. Slightly darker theme and the site name written in the doom font is all it would take.

Still need to learn how themes work, then I'll add some more "doom" ones.  I, personally, prefer a look like this one as it's clean and easy to read, but I have nothing against users choosing their own themes.

Quote from: Radegast on May 20, 2014, 04:51:25 PMforum without a community is useless. Maybe you could negotiate with ioquake3 team to let this board reside in forum.iodoom3.org - brand name is half the success.

There was already nothing stopping iodoom3 from getting their own forum going, thir project and forums just kind of died (compared to other D3 GPL engines).  There didn't seem to be any interest by other sites to start a new modding forum.   This forum kind of ties in to my news site (hence it's all id tech forums, not just d3), but I'd expect projects to have their own forums too.

Great idea, I'll get that assimilated by weeks end.   "assimilate"

I added the syntax plugin (this page has instructions on how to use it: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3070) and added four new themes.  To change your theme click Profile - Summary - Modify Profile - Look and Layout.

The first line of that page will have the ability to change your theme.

Friar, have you or will you contact BNA! and ask him to give you database dump from doom3world.org?

There is also the possibility of manually copying at least the best stuff from web archive, but I don't know how kosher it would be without permission.
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on May 21, 2014, 09:00:30 AM
I haven't heard from in in a bit, I could try contacting him again.

Everything on D3W was considered in the public domain/whatever the legal term is, unless someone said otherwise (IE the Grimm mod would be protected, but tutorials were "free").

I can't access most of the d3w forum on the internet archive, it only seemed to go so far.   :broken:

Hi Everyone, and Howdy, it's horrible to all that got lost on D3W and the YEARS it took to accumulate all the shared knowledge with user experiences and Especially the Tutorials. I'll drop by from time to time and chime in, perhaps a New tutorial section can be created? stickied and rebuilt. That's one thing that was most helpful about D3W, This may never replace that, but it is a start to rebuilding at least 'something. I hope everything goes well and wish everyone all the best!

Post by: Zombie on May 22, 2014, 01:23:27 PM
Yup still am!

Things are very quiet now, so I'll probably go ahead and pick up where we were about a year ago and get on with doing some of those tutorials we spoke about!

I'm off to the south of France end of July to help a studio out with some stuff for 4 months, so I won't get much stuff done then. But right now I can do stuff.

We should discuss what you want to have to start building a nice up to date, high standard way of delivering tutorials/information.

My technical knowledge of idtech has slipped as I haven't used it a lot for anything deep, but I am sure I can scrounge up a enough info to make solid entry level tutorials, and maybe some good design stuff too.

*Bookmarked

Good to see some familiar names.  Will do my part to inform people from our team.

Is there an option for a portal or 'recently posted' type look?  Even if it's a user option.  I often used the old main page to see what was a current hot topic.  Just preferences, nothing that can't be adjusted to though.

EDIT

Never mind, found it at the bottom to some degree!

Yup, down at the bottom of the forum listing is a recent posts link, up top right under your name is a "show unread posts since last visit" and "show new replies to your posts".

Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on June 26, 2014, 06:38:46 AM
Old joint was kinda quite too, except for the off topic discussion.

I'm finding that everything contained only at modwiki & d3w was a really bad long term "plan."  I can find more Quake 2 how-to's, tutorials and info then I can D3 because they're shared all over the net.  Not spreading the info around to other sites really got rid of a bunch of good info (so much for nothing is ever gone from the 'net, eh?).

Yeah, even iddevnet's long gone as well.  I'm still holding out the hope of BNA getting at least a static backup of D3W back at some point.  Looking to do some work with Prey, and backwards engineering existing maps to remember how it all works isn't fun!

Hi

Just FYI - IDDevNet is still online: http://www.iddevnet.com/doom3/

Also I have been able to find some helpful information through http://archive.org/web/ for Doom3world.org and ModWiki - but I can't post an example right now as that site is undergoing some sort of maintenance.

Thanks

What could be neat is we all chip in to help out Tron with any technical details for Prey.

Build our own little library of things.

Of course I have to wait for my Wife to bring my laptop to France in about 4 weeks though.

Actually, we went to UPS and they wanted 250 CAD to send it. So I said don't worry about it and bought a second hand laptop for roughly that price, so I am working on my next DOOM 3 level again.

As for the wife, no comment ;)

I'm toying with the idea of "ads" on the site, but not ads for me to generate income, ads for users to advertise their stuff.  IE a banner ad by btk up top telling about the release of False Dawn.  A banner add by Zombie about his texture packs.

Users would have to make their own banner and I'd approve it before I put it up.

What do people think of this?
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: deadite4 on July 25, 2014, 08:07:39 AM
How large of a banner?  I ask because really my only current complaint on the overall look of the forum is just how many forums there actually are.  When I'm not logged in it's a long scroll to get all the way to the recent posts section, especially when I have zero interest in tech 1, 2 or 3 discussions.

I wouldn't mind the idea, but I'd hate to add more to an already lengthy forum main page.  Is there a way to more efficiently make them into subforums so they aren't their own lines?
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on July 25, 2014, 05:48:54 PM
I use the "show unread posts" button up top.  I don't scroll down unless I want to make a new thread.  id tech 4 should also be right under general.  If you click the forum section titles (id tech 4, for example) it should minimize the list and you only see the heading, except general.

Not sure how to reduce the amount of space the top of the forum takes up.  My wife's laptop requires scrolling on any forum but my 1920x1080 screen doesn't for most of them, so it might just be a matter of resolution.  Maybe get all the info on the side like the GameSpy forums where?

A banner would be ~470x60.

EDIT: in the upper right next to the forum logo is a little arrow.  Clicking the arrow will hide part of the menu.

EDIT2: Changing your theme might make you scroll less too: Profile - Account Settings - Look and Layout (on left) - Current Theme.
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: Zombie on July 26, 2014, 02:34:30 AM
Do you think you could make an example banner and put it where you think it would go so we can see what you have in mind?

Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on July 26, 2014, 06:23:49 AM
Yes, I can.  Give me a couple days to look in to how it can be done and give it a shot.
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: deadite4 on July 26, 2014, 08:04:13 AM
My issue is I typically only sign in if I plan to post something.  So without signing in, you don't get those features of minimizing subforums, unread posts, etc.  When you come here as just a visitor, all you get is this wall of unposted in forums/subforums and to see what recent activity there is it's a long scroll down to see what's going on.

The main portal on D3W was great because you could see right before you went into the forum, what was currently going on.  It's tough to know what's going on here without signing in.
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on July 26, 2014, 08:15:13 AM
See, that's the kind of thing I want to know and you guys (users) to talk about.  :)

So a "latest posts" notice would be something you would like to see.  Tastyspleen (http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php) has something like that, but it's not all new posts, looks lie only from a certain forum or selected ones.

Some things I won't mind getting on the forums, some I might mind, but I want people to find it useful.  I am really trying to avoid "feature creep" with the forums.  For example, I think a shoutbox would be awesome.  Works great on Tastyspleen.  However, we're not a site for telling how to play D3 & a place where players can get together and setup games & what not.  So, I didn't install it.

BTW, why don't you stay signed in?
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: Zombie on July 26, 2014, 08:50:00 AM
Staying signed in helps for me as I keep the other forum sub sections minimised. So I basically just one page of forums.

Something like that would be cool that Tastyspleen uses, maybe something that calls out popular threads or something in descending order?

But I do like the idea of promoting idtech modding, as it's slowly being brushed under the carpet, because there is no intereaction what so ever from id on the modding scene any more :(
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: The Happy Friar on July 26, 2014, 09:12:52 AM
Stupid me, latest posts are currently at the bottom of the forum on the main page.  They show even if you aren't logged in.  So, that should be up top or a separate page someone can click on?

I'll leave it like that for a couple days then change to the default "new posts" layout to see what y'all like better.

EDIT: that little icon to the left of "Recent Posts" brings up all the posts in order of posting so you can read/reply to all of them.  Handy.
Title: Re: Welcome to the id Tech Forums!
Post by: deadite4 on July 27, 2014, 09:13:24 AM
Yeah, that works a lot better(at least for me!).  I wouldn't mind going to the smaller text that you had at the bottom if it helps keep things more neat and tidy.

I'd also be completely fine with the sidebar at tastyspleen.  Really just a quick way for a visitor to see the last X amount of recent posts.  Besides being useful to myself, a new visitor could at least see kind of what's immediately trending and that the board has activity in general going on.

QuoteBTW, why don't you stay signed in?

Basically a habit since I was a kid sharing a family computer.

Miss BNA though.

It feels great to see old names around here once again. I sure hope this community will eventually grow just as big as D3W back then :D
Cheers everyone!

you're welcome!  Glad to see that the e-mail auth system is also working.  Seems to be keeping the spammers out too.  :)

I just logged in to an e-mail account I (pretty much) only use for forum stuff (birthday notices, post notifications, reminding you to confirm your account when you sign up, etc).

It had 300 e-mails in there, most to bogus e-mails used to try to sign in on the forums by spammers, but some legit stuff in there like notification of a reply to a topic.

Has anyone been getting notified if a topic you checked that little box saying "Notify me of replies."?

Whoa, hold on there lets not accuse anyone of being a bot (not that there's anything wrong with that) based on one tiny little post. Did shake sphere not say brevity is the soul of wit? Just because Immi wasn't specific about what this forum is, was Immi not correct in stating this was indeed a tech forum, and do we not have many technical issues here? Why just the other day I was in store having talk about shelf product to worker person as I do all the time because despite any rumor there is no secret robot army, and WE most certainly, I mean THEY most certainly are NOT taking over the internet or looking for any launch codes or anything.

So, yes, Immi, welcome to this tech forum, we look forward to exploring many great tech issues together.

P.S

Mrc i'm not of accusing someone of being a bot lightly, but when i see a username like immigrationcomplaints with a link in the signature to immigrationcomplaints.com followed by really strange English, it just gets suspicious.  ;D
But if is not a bot than Welcome immigrationcomplaints.  ;)

LOL now that i read your reply better, i detected the ironic tone and the being a robot story, hahaha you got me.  :D

Hi guys, I'm not exactly new to the forum, I used to be on here soon after Friar made it, but then some stuff happened with everyones account, and with a bunch of other things, temporarily lost interest in modding. I got things sorted out and im back now. I see the engines (tech4/BFG) have come a really long way in that short period of time and its actually pretty cool, especially when you consider just how few people work on them. Keep up the good work guys, I know I have learned alot from you guys, I hope I can be benificial to yall at some point

So long ago, I'm pretty sure I was Sir Blackington, some dude who was interested in bfg and when rob made got soft shadows to work, too bad I was on an amd card and trying to compile the stuff on debian at the time. Hopefully going to get to build another machine in spring if I get lucky at our office computer auction and put Arch linux on it. Too bad I will still be using amd vid card though. Btw Friar, what drivers you got for your linux/amd stack? and has the performance improved noticably in the last year or so?

I haven't use Linux as a playing platform since I got Win 8.1 a couple years ago.
