Best Doom3 Mod?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if I could get some votes on the best mod for Doom 3.

From what I've seen and tried, perfected Doom 3 looks to be good as it combines sikkmod graphics with other game play enhancements.

Does anyone have any other views on this?

Asking for the 'best' mod is a bit too general of a request I think.  What is it that you're after specifically in a mod?  Without knowing that it's a bit hard to recommend anything :)

The last I remember, Perfected Doom 3 was a bit problematic because the author enabled all shadows on all objects
which lead to terrible polygonal artifacts because many of the assets were not designed with self-shadowing in mind.

The same goes for Absolute HD mod (I presume) since it also adds shadows back to assets that were not designed for them.

I love Sikkmod with Wulfen and Monoxead textures but I must admit that the difficulty tweaks are a bit off-putting. I
think the latest release allowed you to dial those back though..? So this may be the best option.

I personally have always preferred JC Denton's "Dentonmod" which I modified by adding the glprogs directory from the Ruiner mod.
I think Sikkpin's shaders are great but I think the shader choices in Ruiner are closer to the intended "Doom 3 look" and
I haven't been able to achieve this look when tweaking Sikkmod settings.

With the above Denton\Ruiner combo, any custom maps or the vanilla game is much more satisfying because he has cranked the perceived
muscle of the guns to much more satisfying levels while retaining the same damage levels. It just feels better and it looks properly "Doom 3-ish".

Perfected Doom 3 could still be a viable option if you prefer all of the authors anal retentive gameplay tweaks to the tweaks in other mods and you
don't care about the visual defects (if they still exist)...

Best is a little subjective.

I really like Shambler's Castle, a Quake1 style mod. That's a lot of fun, and really makes you wish they made more than one map.

I've also started Fragging Free last night.  It's pretty impressive, loads of new monsters, weapons and abilities (like a railgun and playing as demons).  The maps so far are a little lame, but it's worth a play just for novelty.

Does anyone know any decent straight up map packs? I'm still waiting for Phobos.

I have it on very good authority that Phobos will be well worth the wait.

Not sure about mappacks, but anything by ZizZ I've found greatly fun.

Shambler's Castle is quite short sadly.
The Dark Mod is really damn impressive though.

I hear False Dawn's not bad if you have Quake 4 ;)

If u haven't played the latest of my Perfected Doom 3 mod then u need too because the self shadowing problems spoken of here have already been fixed by me and doomtrinity. And I think we even fixed one more small shadow bug for the next release. So they're no more. I love the Hexen mod.

If you only have a small group of human players and would like to fill out the blank spots with more or less skilled Bots it should give you and your buddies a good time...
