Title: Toronto Game Industry
Post by: douglas quaid on October 04, 2014, 06:03:49 PM
Hey guys, I couldn't find a more appropriate sub-forum so I'll post here.

I was just wondering would any of you guys know what the Canadian game industry is like, in particular, Toronto. You see, I'll be moving there in the new year and I'm just doing some research now about possible work in games. Anybody here have any experience in Toronto or know of anyone who has worked there in games?

I saw this tweet yesterday: https://twitter.com/grujicbr/status/520601380583911424
Seems like Ubisoft has a studio there and they're currently hiring

It's very competitive to work in Canada.

In Toronto the games industry isn't very big, it is basically Ubisoft(where I work) and Rockstar (where you don't want to work)

Montreal is very very competitive as there are a lot of large studios there.

It is very hard to get a level designer position as there are A LOT of level designers around.

I would just send in your CV and hope for the best, if you're really good, you'll at least get an interview.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciated.

Yeah I heard Montreal is quite competitive and I also heard you would need French also, which I'm not too well versed in. I chose Toronto as I also do sound for theatre and it seems to be a pretty big arts hub. It just gives me more options. By the way Zombie, what's up with Rockstar?

Rockstar burns you out very quickly, and not really good working conditions.

Ouch. I thought there is a shortage of good level designers :(

Those two things aren't necesarily mutually exclusive.

Even when they have good LD's knocking at the door sometimes nobody answers.  It's very competitive.
