I'd like to know what what OS everyone is using here and for what reasons...

I am currently using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and plan on using it for quite a while longer (even after the free upgrade option period to Windows 10 will expire this summer).

Reasons:

IMO Win7 is the best OS suited for my needs. It has a nice Desktop and UI to look at (never could get warm with the minimalism styled UIs of Win 8, 8.1 and 10 looking way too boring to me. It almost felt like I was using Windows 3.1 again.

It runs stable for me, never crashes and unlike previous OSs I had to never re-install or recover this version running it since the first install (Original Install Date: 07.08.2009, 6:37:12 PM) almost 7 years ago. I remember having to recover system partitions on a daily basis up to 30 times a day with previous Windows versions when I would do experimental stuff braking the functionality of the OS in the process.

Not a fan of the windows 10 store. Also not as impressed by Directx12 as Microsoft would like me to be (and we still will be able to use Vulkan on Win7).

With most applications and games moving to an online-service business model nowadays I have the feeling that Windows 10 tries to pursue that same route which I am not supporting.

Also I was reading unconfirmed reports about software and games incompatibility issues and especially the ones about stereoscopic 3D Game rendering alarmed me the most.

using win10 pro since day 1. never had any incompatibility issues. or any other for that matter that wasn't a problem in previous versions.
reason: windows tends to be faster with each iteration.
UI is fine, straightforward as always.

used various linux distros for old hardware as well (and educational purposes). arch's package-management, rolling release-nature and system-wide flexibility is legendary.

off: i wonder how something such as sven coop could be made for doom3. MCS has advanced netcode, right? couldn't that be a base for a project like that? look at the source engine. its greatest achievement is garry's mod. people love doom/quake/half-life not because of the main game, but rather because they see them as a sandboxing tool. that's what we need. alas it requires dedicated engineers on board for that to achieve. if that doesn't lead to a drastic change as far as the community growth goes, than nothing ever will.
(phrozo's tweaks also would make a nice foundation)

I'm not spreading anything. I'm replying to a comment he made telling me what I need to be doing as far as my religious beliefs go. No need to discriminate against me nor my intelligence.

i'll go by what motorsep just said and drop this topic overall. but to add to your lines, if i were to relate myself to the judeo-christian version of reality, i'd see Christ as a failed experiment who didn't live up to his utmost potential, therefore worshipping him instead of God is a major deconceptualization of how we shape our attitudes towards a (theoretical) omnipotent & omniscient entity. same reason basically the jews never accepted him.

What's so funny?

well the fact that you're spreading your archaic views on a games' forum is funny as fuck on its own. let alone that you're representing it in a fashion as if it was a lecture on newtonian laws and admission would be dictated by common sense.

trippy.

motorsep has been making some really valid points. modern gamedev simply follows more streamlined and less obscure disciplines which enables more focus on design. that's called evolution (sry creationists).

I happen to like brutal doom very much and I am neither 12 nor a psychopath.

:fatty:

obviously it was a broad generalization.

this is a bit off and many of you will find it stupid, but here i go:
any of you guys find it possible to crowdfund-purchase the wolfenstein (2009) engine from bethesda? by purchasing i, of course, mean that they would put it under GPL. not that they would ever use or license it again. imagine if someone could port doom3 to it.

"I feel the engine has a lot of potential, and deserves a wider audience than what it has now, especially since we've had a quality open source port for a while, and cheap low-to-mid-end computers run the game well.

I believe a key element in reviving interest in Doom³ is a killer app mod.
Sort of like what the controversial Brutal Doom did for the Doom scene"

the doom scene is where it is because of the endless ocean of custom content, fun multiplayer & easy-to-use editing tools. brutal doom appeals only the 12 year-old psychopaths imho. right now doom 3 has like 0.1% of what's available for doom-based projects. it's not stock doom3 that needs to be revived (it's just a black box causing severe claustrophobia really). for starters, we'd need a distribution system such as gauge (for goldsource/source) or tdm's built-in mission-downloader for easier custom map-accessibility, new & updated tutorials, fun multiplayer modes/maps. if all that people can do is coming up with some gpu-rapist particle effect every once a year then it will die to death this decade for sure.
