Well folks,

here is the first public footage of the new Doom game by id software (idtech6)...

Nice, but is it idTech6 ?

Or rather I wonder how much different idtech 6 from idTech 5 at this point? Doesn't really look any different from high quality Doom 3 model :D

From what I know from my source, right before Doom 4 was scrapped, gameplay is what was bad-ass. I think nowadays graphics are equally the same on all engines (except idtech 5 megatextures).

Well wikipedia says:

QuoteOn July 19, 2014, in light of Crytek's recent financial difficulties, it was announced that Tiago Sousa, head R&D graphics engineer at Crytek was leaving to join the Doom and idTech 6 engine team.

...it also says:

Quote
Main article: id Tech 6
id Tech 6 is an upcoming game engine with "DOOM" under development by id Software.

And THIS polygon.com article says:

QuoteThe new Doom game is just titled 'Doom,' runs on id Tech 6, and more details

I was thinking similarly... it somehow feels good that the tripple A studios are not that much ahead visually from our community based Doom3 projects...

I am pretty sure idtech 6 is idtech 5 without megatextures and with some deferred rendering and decalling like CryEngine. I do hope they didn't go CryTek route and tried making all-in-one engine.

I thought it looked like a nice quality D3 mod too.  :)

My big question is "Will it be an action filled gun fest like D1/2?".  I don't want another D3.  I didn't like D3 gameplay.  I like D1/2.  I knew D3 wasn't like that when I bought it though, id gave no misinformation about what D3 was, just haven't heard anything about D4 yet.

Really, I want the "I AM AWESOME" feeling that D1/2 had back.  DNF had it somewhat, but Duke was always a little less action oriented then Doom to begin with.

Doom 3's RoE feels much better than Doom 3 itself. Double barrel shotgun gives you that satisfying feeling of being bad-ass :)

Doom 3 BFG feels pretty good compare to original Doom 3 because it has more ammo, so you don't have to play it as Resident Evil game and conserve ammo.

I am not sure where voxels fit into new Doom discussion. Voxelnauts looks cute, but not even close as cool as that walking Revenant.

BielBdeLuna

they might not use voxels at all

I love the sheen on the shotgun and the effect of reflections on the Revenant's rocket launchers. PBR?

trebor

Although virtual texture streaming allows geometry streaming if the geometry is compressed to octree voxel data, I think it is not worth because you have to write the tools for the voxel creation.
High poly modelling tools aren't required to work with voxels and to export a voxel based format.

PBR is the next logical iteration for id Tech 5 because it fits so well with precomputed light and that is the part id Tech 5 is really good at.
The important aspect of PBR that makes the assets so good looking is the indirect lighting which really challenges all realtime approaches.

VGames

I love the individual FX on the Revenant. The energy that pulsates from his chest as he fires the rockets is a nice unnecessary effect that shows how the devs care. Can't wait.
