Question about Sikkmod variables

Does anyone know what the "damage_doom_range" and "damage_doom_scale" are for in the damage definitions? Some of them vary radically.

Here is the one from the pistol:

iiirc in sikkmod you can choose between new damage setting and d3's, I guess those are the old values for range and damage.

Also, how exactly does the range parameter work?
